CHENEY, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's tennis team recorded its first win of the season Saturday afternoon in Cheney, Wash. as they handed Whitman College a 5-2 loss.
The Bulldogs captured the early advantage as they won two of the three doubles matches. In the No.1 doubles spot Dru Ernst and Reid Arthur battled with Whitman's Steven Ly and Phalkum Mam and came away with a 9-7 win. Freshman Cooper Fratt and junior Robert Penney teamed together to defeat Brad Changstrom and Dane Miller, 8-3. The GU team of Brett Womack and Marco Pineda were defeated by Robbie Munday and Adam Chemerinsky in the final doubles match, 8-4.
GU took the momentum from the doubles victory and took four of the six singles matches. Ernst handed Mam a 6-0, 6-3 loss in the No. 1 spot and Womack defeated Miller a 6-4, 6-2 loss in the No. 2 spot. Fratt picked up another point for the Zags when he defeated Munday, 4-6, 7-6, 10-8 in the No. 4 spot. GU's final win of the day came in the No. 5 singles spot when Pineda downed Chemerinsky, 6-4, 7-6.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Sunday Feb. 6 as they will host the University of Nevada, Reno in a 10 a.m. match in Spokane, Wash.
