GU Narrowly Defeated by Nevada

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's tennis team was narrowly defeated 4-3 by the University of Nevada, Reno Sunday afternoon at the North Park Racquet Club.

The Wolf Pack jumped out to the early lead as they captured the doubles point. In the No. 2 doubles spot the Wolf Pack team of Brandon Sieh and Rafal Stupka defeated Gonzaga's team of freshman Cooper Fratt and junior Robert Penney, 8-2. In the No. 3 spot GU's sophomore Brett Womack and freshman Marco Pineda lost to Max Volger and Eldar Dzhafarov, 8-4 and the No. 1 doubles spot did not finish.

Gonzaga made the match close in singles play as they recorded three wins. Womack defeated Popovic, 3-6, 7-4, 7-6 (5) for his second singles win in as many days. Fratt also picked up a win for the Zags as he handed Stupka a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 loss in the No. 4 spot. Pineda also recorded a win for GU as he defeated Dzhafarov in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Feb. 18 when they travel to Pacific Northwest rival, the University of Washington for a 5 p.m. match.
