Volleyball Falls In Five To New Mexico

MISSOULA, Mont. - The Gonzaga University Bulldogs could not sustain the momentum they built in game four as they fell in five games to the University of New Mexico in Saturday morning action at the Ruby's Invitational. The Lobos won 27-30, 30-28, 30-24, 22-30, 15-11 to improve to 4-2 on the season and 2-0 in the tournament. Gonzaga fell to 5-4 overall and will play UC Davis later on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs came out determined in game one as they rallied from five points down to picked a 30-27 win despite having a lower attack percentage than New Mexico. Becky Jones sparked the GU comeback with four of her match-high 22 kills coming in the game.
New Mexico was able to control the pace of play in games two and three as Nicole Ryan and Chelsea Sondrup led the Lobos. Ryan would finish with 19 kills while Sondrup added 15 kills and 6 block assists. New Mexico was successful at the net against GU finished with 21 total blocks as Kelly Therkelsen also added 6 block assists.
Gonzaga responded in game four hitting a blistering .486 as Lacey Bell and Michelle Boevers joined the action. Bell finished with 14 kills while Boevers added 13. Gonzaga would hit .209 as a team but faltered in game five picking up only four kills on 18 total attacks. New Mexico took advantage scoring nine of their 15 points on kills.
The Bulldogs dug the ball extremely well for the second straight match finishing with 64 led by Jones' 20 digs and Alecia Douglas with 10. Gayle Tripp was the top Lobo player with 15. Briawna Mueller continued to be a force at the net for Gonzaga with 8 total blocks including 3 solo.
