Zags Swept By WCC Regular Season Champion Saint Mary's

MORAGA, Calif. - Lauren Corp led all players with 13 points and a .440 attack percentage to help No. 22 Saint Mary's College defeat Gonzaga University in three sets during a West Coast Conference women's volleyball match at McKeon Pavilion in Moraga, Calif., Thursday evening. The Gaels, who already clinch their first WCC regular season title last weekend, improved to 20-4 overall and 12-1 in conference play with the 25-12, 25-14, 29-27 victory. With the loss the Bulldogs are now 10-17 overall and 5-9 in the WCC.
The Zags, who were coming off a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the University of San Francisco last Saturday, struggled to find their grove as they finished the match with just 35 kills and a .161 hitting clip. Senior classmates Layne Brosky and Michelle Boevers were the top GU hitters, finishing with nine and eight kills, respectively.
Sophomore setter Denise Van de Mortel picked up her ninth double-double of the season by passing out 35 assists and collecting 15 digs. Junior Allyson Powell was also all over the floor defensively for the Bulldogs, finishing with 13 digs.
Corp and the Gaels were on fire all evening as the team combined for a .338 hitting percentage, connecting for 53 kills with nine errors on 130 total attempts. SMC's best hitting set was the second when it had 15 kills and no errors on 24 attempts for an impressive .650 attacking clip. Megan York was the other Gael to break into double-figure kills with 11. Saint Mary's was led defensively by Alita Fisher who had a match-high 19 digs.
Gonzaga closes out the 2009 season when it plays its final match at the University of San Diego on Saturday. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
