Bulldogs Close Out Fall At Head of the Lake Regatta

ON TAP: The Gonzaga University men's and women's rowing teams close out their fall seasons when they travel to Seattle, Wash., for the 28th Head of the Lake Regatta on Sunday, Nov. 9. First race is set to go at 8 a.m. on Montlake Cut. The Head of the Lake is co-hosted by the University of Washington and the Lake Washington Rowing Club.
HEAD OF THE LAKE: Racing for the Head of the Lake will begin at 8 a.m. The three mile regatta is the largest Fall regatta west of the Mississippi. The Head of the Lake starts on Lake Union, continues east through the Montlake Cut to Lake Washington and finishes near the University of Washington's Conibear Shellhouse. This year's course is known as the "classic course" used most often in the regatta's 27 year history.
WHO THEY WILL BE RACING: The Gonzaga University men's and women's rowing teams will be pitted against Washington, University of Puget Sound, Washington State University, University of British Columbia, University of Victoria, Seattle University and the Head of the Lake.
LAST YEAR AT THE HEAD OF THE LAKE: The Gonzaga University men's rowing team won two of three races at the Head of the Lake Regatta in 2008. The first victory was in the Junior Varsity 8+ race where the Bulldogs pulled out a four second victory over the University of Victoria with a time of 16:44.94. The Zags other first place finish was in the Third Varsity 8+. GU, whose boat was made up of the novice rowers, clocked in a finish of 16:56.28. The Varsity 8+ placed third in its race with a time of 16:12.80. The Gonzaga University women's rowing team had a strong showing in last year's Head of the Lake. The Varsity 8+ claimed a fourth place finish with a time of 18:07.56. The Bulldogs best finish of the day came in the Second Varsity 8. Gonzaga placed third, crossing the finish line at 18:59.56.
HEAD MEN'S ROWING COACH DAN GEHN'S THOUGHTS ON THE HEAD OF THE LAKE: "This is our biggest race of the fall. I'm looking forward to doing better than we did last week at the Head of the Snake."
HEAD WOMEN'S ROWING COACH MELISSA FLINT'S THOUGHTS ON THE HEAD OF THE LAKE: "We're looking to continue to improve on our performances. Washington State will be there again to use as a gauge, and we will have the opportunity to race many other programs this weekend."
