SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University junior Derek Cheney and sophomore Kyle Huus have been named to the All-West Coast Conference men's golf team after the duo tied for fifth at the WCC Championship earlier this week.
Cheney, from Richland, Wash., and Huus, from Sidney, Neb., posted the highest finish ever by a Bulldog in the WCC Championship and became the inaugural All-WCC selections in Gonzaga history. Brandon Crick and Trevor Loe tied for ninth in 2007, Souta Nozaka finished tied for 10th in 2003, Matt Munroe finished 10th in 2002 and Craig Lawrence was 10th in 1992 for the only other Top 10 finishes in Bulldog history. Gonzaga has had honorable mention honorees, Loe last season and Crick and Loe in 2007 the most recent.
The Bulldogs finished tied for fifth at this year's championship, the highest Gonzaga finish in its WCC history. The Bulldogs have finished sixth six times for their previous best showings.
Pepperdine University sophomore Andrew Putnam was named the Player of the Year by vote of conference coaches on Wednesday. Putnam earned seven top 10 finishes this season and is currently ranked No. 21 in the nation by Golfweek.
The University of San Francisco took home Coach of the Year honors as head coach Gary Nelson helped lead his team to its first WCC title since 1990. Nabbing WCC Freshman of the Year honors was the University of San Diego's Alex Ching. Ching entered the 2009 WCC Championships at No. 4 in the WCC individual standings.
