PULLMAN, Wash. - Redshirt junior goalkeeper Lauren Ames tied her career high for saves with 12 but her effort wasn't enough as the Gonzaga University women's soccer team fell 4-0 to in-state rival Washington State University in a non-conference match at Lower Soccer Field Friday.
The native of Albuquerque, N.M., equaled her career high set twice in 2008 against Weber State University and Santa Clara University. Her 12 saves were a season high this year, surpassing the seven she had against both then-No. 6 Florida State University and then-No. 22 University of Southern California.
Washington State (5-6-0) scored its first goal at 43:37. Micaela Castain intercepted a pass inside the Bulldogs (4-7-1) penalty area and took a shot that beat Ames to the right post.
The Cougars extended their lead at 50:29 when Eileen Maes blasted a free kick from 35 yards to the upper right corner. Maes would later add two more goals at 86:41 and 89:49 to earn a hat trick.
Senior midfielder Sheridan Jones led the Bulldogs in shots with four, including one that was to the right side of the goal but Cougar goalkeeper Meghan Berlingo made a dive to make the save.
"We did some good things today but unfortunately the 4-0 score doesn't show that," Bulldogs head coach Amy Edwards said. "Overall I didn't feel like the result indicated our competitiveness in the game today."
The Zags return home Sunday to conclude their non-conference schedule against Eastern Washington University at 1 p.m.
