Eysteinsson Named All-WCC Men's Soccer Second Team

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University's men's soccer team had a record nine players receive mention on the All-West Coast Conference teams announced Wednesday, including second team midfielder/defender Stefan Thor Eysteinsson.
Goalkeeper Ryan Caballero, defender Greg Carter and midfielder Nick Hamer were named to the All-Freshman Team.
Goalkeeper Ryan Caballero, defender Greg Carter and midfielder Nick Hamer were named to the All-Freshman Team. Seniors Philippe Garre, Collin Harrison and Nick Love; junior Colin Flynn, and freshmen James Partee and Hamer were also accorded honorable mention recognition.
Flynn, Eysteinsson and Garre accounted for the bulk of the Bulldog offense this season. Flynn paced the team in goals with four and added an assist for a team-high nine points. Eysteinsson had three goals and an assist for seven points and Garre had a goal and a team-high five assists for seven points.
"We will miss our seniors, but I'm really happy for the freshmen," 16th-year head coach Einar Thorarinsson said. "They will give us a solid base to build for the future."
The Bulldogs had seven honorees in both 2007 and '08.
University of San Diego sophomore forward Patrick Wallen was named the WCC Player of the Year and Santa Clara head coach Cam Rast was named Coach of the Year. In addition, defender Roger Downes of Loyola Marymount University was named WCC Defensive Player of the Year and University of Portland midfielder/forward Steven Evans was selected as WCC Freshman of the Year.
Wallen, who was selected by vote of the conference head coaches, is San Diego's second consecutive WCC Player of the Year after Ryan Peterman won the honor last season. Loyola Marymount walked away with the same amount of awards as San Francisco, one of which was the WCC Freshman of the Year honor given to defender Roger Downes. Downes, an All-Freshman Team member, also emerged as an All-WCC Second Team selection for the Lions, garnering him three separate honors in his freshman career.
Cam Rast, who led Santa Clara to a share of the WCC regular season championship with Loyola Marymount, was named the 2010 WCC Men's Soccer Coach of the Year. In addition, defender Roger Downes of Loyola Marymount was named WCC Defensive Player of the Year and Portland midfielder/forward Steven Evans was selected as WCC Freshman of the Year.
