Women's Rowing Hosts WSU, WWU Saturday At Silver Lake

April 23, 2010

SPOKANE, Wash.
ON TAP:
The Gonzaga University women's rowing team hosts Washington State University and Western Washington University Saturday, April 24 in its lone home race of the season. The Bulldogs will race the Cougars and Vikings on Silver Lake in Medical Lake.

HEAD COACH MELISSA FLINT'S THOUGHTS ON THE UPCOMING RACES: "It's been a few weeks since our last race and we've been working on different aspects of our race, so we're looking forward to seeing what kind of speed we have gained in continued preparation for our conference championships. We scrimmaged Western Washington a few weeks ago and are interested in seeing what happens this time around. Washington State has had a good season so far and shown a lot of speed, and we're excited about getting the chance to race them on our home course. Overall, it should be a good weekend of racing."

ASSISTANT COACH MARK VOORHEE'S THOUGHTS ON THE VARSITY 4+ RACES: "We're going up against very good Washington State boats in both events, but we've made a good deal of progress in the last few weeks. We'll be racing to win, but our main goal is go out and race our best race for where we're at in the season. Win or lose, we'll need to learn what we can from our performance to ensure we are at our very best when we head to Sacramento to defend the West Coast Conference title next weekend."

A LOOK BACK TO 2009 VERSUS WASHINGTON STATE: Washington State University won all five races against Gonzaga University in 2009. The Bulldogs, who hosted the Cougars at Liberty Lake, instead of their home course in Silver Lake due to weather, fell in the marquee Varsity 8+ race to WSU by six seconds.

GONZAGA RECEIVING VOTES: The Gonzaga University women's rowing team is one of 13 schools also receiving votes in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/USRowing Top 20. The Bulldogs garnered nine votes this week to tie for 24th.

WASHINGTON STATE AND WESTERN WASHINGTON BOTH RANKED: The Washington State University women's rowing team is ranked 10th in this week's Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/USRowing Top 20. The Cougars moved up three spots this week after garnering 250 votes. The Western Washington University women's rowing Varsity 8+ is ranked first in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/USRowing Top 5 for Division II Eights.
