MISSOULA, Mont. - Junior Sarah Rhodes once again proved to be a dangerous forward.
Her second multi-goal match on the season helped give the Gonzaga University women's soccer team a come-from-behind 3-2 win over the University of Montana Sunday on the final day of the Montana Tournament. Gonzaga ends its season-opening four-match road trip 2-1-1.
A native of Victoria, B.C., Rhodes earned her third goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 26th minute to tie the match at two. With help from freshman midfielder Emily Eckmann, Rhodes scored the go-ahead goal in the 70th minute by performing a spin move through Montana's defenders and taking a one touch shot from 24 yards out.
The Grizzlies got on the scoreboard early in the first half. Montana's India Watne set up Erin Craig's shot from 15 yards out to the inside left post to gave the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the match.
Senior midfielder Sheridan Jones scored her first goal on the year in the 19th minute to help the Bulldogs even the score at one. Freshman forward Cassie Geerdts' pass to the center of the goal box allowed Jones to score from 8 yards.
Although Jones' goal evened the score at one, the Grizzlies regained the lead in the 25th minute thanks to Kaitlyn Heinsohn's free kick from 12 yards.
"We struggled to find our rhythm early, but we composed ourselves the second half, especially defensively," Bulldog head coach Amy Edwards said.
Gonzaga once again proved itself to be an aggressive offensive team. The Bulldogs outshot the Grizzlies 26-8. The Bulldogs also held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
"I was very happy with our pressing today, which led to many attacking opportunities and shots, but we must continue to get more of these shots on goal to be more dangerous," stated Edwards.
The Bulldogs make their home debut Friday against UC Irvine at 4 p.m. at Gonzaga Soccer Field.
