PULLMAN, Wash. - Gonzaga University's men's golf team hit the ball well but the short game wasn't there Tuesday as the Bulldogs finished 14th at the Palouse Cougar Collegiate hosted by Washington State University at Palouse Ridge Golf Club.
The Bulldogs were consistent - three players with 74s, one with a 75 and another with a 78 - but Gonzaga was unable to move up after finishing Monday's 36 holes in 14th. Gonzaga shot a final-round 297 to post a 54-hole score of 883. Host Washington State University captured the team title at 827 for a 12-stroke victory over the University of Idaho after entering the final round with a 10-stroke advantage.
Sophomore Travis Johnsen one of the three Bulldog players to shoot 74 Tuesday over the 7,308-yard, par 72 course and finished at 217 to tie for 30th. Francis Santiago and Kyle Huus also shot a final-round 74, Santiago finishing with a 222 and Huus at 223. Freshman Peter Gullickson, who shot 76-70 Monday in his collegiate debut, shot 78 Tuesday and finished at 224. Oliver Grabb shot 75 and finished with a 228.
Damian Telles of Idaho captured medalist honors with rounds of 66-70-65 for 201 and a 2-stroke victory over teammate Jarred Bossio.
The course played a little harder today but was still very scoreable," Gonzaga head coach Robert Gray said. "As a team we hit the ball well enough to score better, but we continued to struggle with reading the greens."
The toughest schedule Gray has put together only gets tougher, according to Gray, with the Bulldogs competing next Monday and Tuesday at the Husky Invitational.
"Our schedule only gets tougher as the season progresses, so we'll need to do a better job of reading the greens and clean up some of the areas with each player in order to compete at a higher level," Gray said.
