Mehndiratta, Farmer Win Doubles Match But Zags Drop To Cougars

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team suffered its first setback of the season Saturday, losing 7-0 at Washington State University.
Despite losing the doubles point seniors Rika Mehndiratta and Danielle Farmer put together a strong performance at the No. 1 spot. They trailed 7-4 but a late rally earned them a 9-8 win over Liudmila Vasilieva and Olga Musilovich.
Junior Sophie Lantta led the Bulldogs' effort in singles play against Marina Nicholas at the No. 6 spot. Lantta won the first set 7-5 but Marina came back and won the next two 6-1, 11-9.
"I thought we played well in doubles," head coach D.J. Gurule said. "Rika and Danielle had a great win at No. 1 doubles but we had some trouble getting into rhythm in singles. Sophie played a great match but came up just a bit short. I am very impressed with her play early in the season. Rika also played very solid and had some opportunities but couldn't quite get over the top."
The Bulldogs road trip continues next weekend with three matches in Bozeman, Mont., starting with the University of Montana Friday Friday at 9 a.m. PT.
"We have a very tough road trip next weekend," Gurule said. "But we are looking forward to being able to bounce back from this loss."
