SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University junior Lindsey has been named to the 2011 West Coast Conference Women's Cross Country All-Academic first team.
Sophomore Emily Thomas earned honorable mention, while on the men's side senior Andrew Walker and sophomore Willie Milam earned honorable mention accolades.
Drake carries a 3.78 GPA in biology. She and Thomas were the Bulldogs top two runners this fall, Drake winning her first collegiate meet at the Inland Northwest Invitational at Spokane Falls Community College the last weekend of the regular season. She had finished a close second in two other meets this season. At the West Coast Conference Championship last Saturday, Drake was in position for a Top 10 finish until dehydration set in over the last mile and she finished back in the pack.
Thomas, who has a 3.40 GPA in human physiology, was sidelined for two meets midway through the season. She returned at the Inland Northwest Invitational to finish fifth and help the Bulldogs to the team title. She placed ninth in the WCC Championship to earn All-WCC honors.
Walker, who missed the first half of the season with an injury, returned to finish 12th and 13th, respectively, in the last two regular-season meets to make the Bulldog squad for the WCC Championship. He has a 3.64 GPA in political science.
Milam carries a 3.69 GPA in business and led Gonzaga to an upset of then-16th ranked University of Oregon in a dual meet early in the season. He finished 27th in last week's WCC Championship.
In addition to Thomas, five other members of the All-Academic teams earned All-WCC status at last Saturday's championship.
"As a conference, we are very proud to celebrate the academic achievements of these student-athletes," said WCC Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich. "After a highly competitive championship event last weekend at Crystal Springs, seeing some of those top finishers on the all-academic list truly exemplifies the dedication of these runners both on the course and in the classroom."
