BEAUMONT, Calif. - Gonzaga University senior Kyle Huus finished in a three-way tie for fourth and the Bulldogs claimed sixth as a team as the Braveheart Classic men's golf tournament concluded Tuesday.
Huus shot a final-round 74 for a 54-hole score of even-par 216. He had rounds of 73-69 Monday over the 7,003-yard, par 72 Oak Valley Golf Club.
"Kyle posted a good final round of 74 considering he didn't have any birdies, just two bogies and 16 pars. This was a great showing for him and a great boost going into our Conference Championship next week," Gonzaga head coach Robert Gray said.
Peter Gullickson shot a 70 Tuesday for his best round of the tournament to move into a three-way tie for seventh at 217 after rounds of 72-75 Monday. Oliver Grabb, who had a pair of 73's Monday, came in with a 77 Tuesday to finish in a three-way tie for 23rd. Travis Johnsen battled back from an opening-round 81 to shoot 75-74 the final two rounds.
"Peter continued his consistent play with his round of 70, and Travis hit the ball all week and had so many putts burn the edges this week. Sometimes the putts just don't want to drop, but he stayed patient and posted a helpful score today," Gray noted.
The Bulldogs, who were fifth after Monday's 36 holes, finished sixth after shooting a 295 Tuesday, four strokes out of fourth.
"As a team we struggled the past couple of events so to finish sixth this week is big for us heading into the conference championship. We really placed the ball in the right spots this week. Now we need to do the same next week to give ourselves the opportunity to score well," Gray said.
Long Beach State University captured team honors at 870, good for a 2-stroke lead over Loyola Marymount University. Jake Sarnoff of LMU claimed medalist honors with rounds of 67-69-72 for an 8-under par 208 and a three-shot advantage over Anders Engell of Saint Mary's College.
With five West Coast Conference teams in the field - the University of Portland and University of San Francisco joining Gonzaga, LMU and SMC - they got a good look at each other heading into the WCC Championship Monday and Tuesday at San Juan Oaks Golf Club in Hollister, Calif.
