SUNNYVALE, Calif. - Gonzaga's cross country teams turned in solid performances to place third on the men's side and fifth on the women's at the West Coast Conference Championships in Sunnyvale, Calif., on Saturday.

For the women, both Shelby Mills and Amelia Evans turned in top-10 finishes to earn First Team All-WCC honors, while senior Nick Roche earned Second Team All-WCC on the men's side.

Roche placed 15th overall with an 8,000-meter time of 23 minutes, 52 seconds at Baylands Park, the home course of Santa Clara University. All five Zags finished in the top 30 to help the team to 109 points. Portland took the title with 28 points, just holding off BYU, who had 31.

"We engaged early and were bold and brave and mixed it up," head coach Pat Tyson said. "After the first two miles, Portland and BYU turned it up a notch. Nick Roche hung on pretty good with them. I thought we took some risks and tried to shake things up. We learned a lot. We went out hard and paid the price a little bit, but we got third in the WCC behind BYU and Portland, two really good teams. We just need to keep closing the gap with those schools and the Pac-12 schools at regionals at Stanford in two weeks."

Sophomore Troy Fraley hung with Roche and the lead group for much of the race, but fell off the pace towards the end, coming in 21st at 24:15. Kyle Branch had a solid race, nearly nipping his teammate Fraley, just a second behind for 22nd. Danny Lunder and Colin O'Neil rounded out the top five for the Zags in 25th and 26th, respectively. Lunder came across in 24:27, while O'Neil was at 24:32.

"There's Kyle Branch again, third place on our team, you've got to give him a lot of credit for stepping up and coming in as our No. 3," Tyson said. "Another guy that ran great was Danny Lunder. He ran a really good race and was only 10 seconds behind Kyle and Troy."

On the women's side, Mills and Evans, both juniors, led the way with their all-conference performances and career-best 6,000-meter times. Mills came across in seventh at 20:07 and Evans was 10th overall at 20:30.

"Outstanding performances from those [Mills and Evans]," women's head coach Patty Ley said. "To be one of the top teams you need to have two people in the top 10. The ladies really took that on as a challenge this year, so to have those two is fantastic. Great for Shelby, confidence-wise it's huge. She had a great race, and showed that she's one of those people. Amelia had some Achilles things going on and was a little under the weather, so to do what she did was impressive."

The next group of Zag women was led by a career-best run from junior Erin Bergmann, followed by freshman Jordan Thurston and junior Zoe Urcadez. The three were able to feed off each other and help move the Zags well into sole possession of fifth overall. Bergmann was 31st at 21:27, followed by Thurston in 32nd at 21:29 and Urcadez in 34th at 21:32.

"Erin Bergman really took a chance and set a tone for herself and the rest of the ladies," Ley said. "In the last 800, the group really finished really well. Eight of our nine women had their best 6k ever, so that's really, really good to see heading into the regionals."

GU will be back in action for the NCAA West Regional in Palo Alto, Calif. Stanford University will host the meet at their home course on Friday, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m.
