SAN BRUNO, Calif.—For the second year in a row, junior Heather Johnson earned West Coast Conference First Team All-Academic honors as announced Friday by the conference office.
Joining her in the academic accolades are Karley Baggerly, Cricket Harber, Tori Lee, and Katey Pennington, who each were named All-Academic Honorable Mention.
Johnson, a midfielder, has a 3.71 GPA as a business administration major concentrating on finance and human resource management. On the field, she leads the Zags with five goals and is tied for the team lead with 12 points. With her second consecutive honor, she's won First Team All-Academic both years of eligibility for the award.
Both Lee and Pennington picked up their third Honorable Mention, also earning the honors in each of the last two years. Lee, a senior, will graduate with a degree in economics this May and has tallied a 3.88 GPA over the last three years. She's scored a career-high four goals this season, including back-to-back game winners against Saint Mary's and Pacific in early October. Pennington, also a senior, has posted a 3.72 GPA as a biology major. She's also had a top-notch senior season, setting a career-high and tying for the team lead with four assists while helping the Zag defense tally its lowest goals-against average since 2007. The Boise, Idaho, native also scored her first career goal earlier this season as well.
Harber earned Honorable Mention honors for the second year in a row. A fellow senior, Harber has tallied a 3.70 GPA as a business administration major concentrating in marketing while picking up a minor in Spanish as well. On the field Harber has been just as successful, manning one of the center back positions on the Zag defense. She's played 1,527 minutes this season, fourth-most of any Zag field player.
Rounding out the Zags' All-Academic honors is Baggerly, who picks up Honorable Mention in her first year of eligibility for the award. A sophomore, she's posted a 3.48 GPA as an undeclared business major. Baggerly has also been instrumental in the Zags' attack this season. She's tied for the team lead with four assists and 12 points, and she's netted four goals herself, tied with Lee for the second-best mark on the squad. More than that, however, she's frequently drawn the attention of opposing defenses, allowing other Zags free space in the attacking end. Thanks in part to Baggerly's presence, 10 different Zags have found the net while 14 have registered at least one point.
To be considered for a WCC All-Academic honor, each player must hold at least a 3.20 GPA and be enrolled at their institution for at least one year. Also, candidates must be a starter or other significant contributor to the team.
The Gonzaga women's soccer team will wrap up its 2014 regular season Saturday, Nov. 8, with a match against Portland at 1:00 p.m. on Luger Field in Spokane. Prior to kickoff, the Zags will honor Harber, Lee, Pennington, and the four other seniors playing their final home match in a short Senior Day ceremony.
