SAN BRUNO, Calif.—Two Gonzaga University cross country runners - Shelby Mills and Ian Goldizen - both earned academic honors from the West Coast Conference Thursday as the conference office announced the 2014 WCC All-Academic teams for men's and women's cross country.
Mills earned All-Academic Honorable Mention after a breakout junior season. The Snohomish, Wash., native turned in five top 25 finishes, including a 7th-place finish at the WCC Championships in November, earning First Team All-WCC in the process. She also finished seventh overall at the Inland Empire Championships in October, and she ran for the Zags in the NCAA West Regional, finishing second on the team and 40th overall. In the classroom, Mills has a 3.31 grade point average as a biology major. This is Mills' first All-Academic award from the WCC.
Also being honored for the first time, Goldizen represented GU men's cross country in the All-Academic Honorable Mention pool. The redshirt sophomore saved his best running for the last three races of 2014. His highest finish of the year came Oct. 18 at the Inland Empire Championship when he placed 16th, and he went on to run for Gonzaga at both the WCC Championships and the NCAA West Regionals. Goldizen finished in the top half of the standings in both of those races, scoring for the Zags at Regionals. As a marketing major, Goldizen has accumulated a 3.28 GPA.
In order to qualify for WCC All-Academic awards, runners must hold a 3.20 GPA, be at their institution for at least one full year, and be a significant contributor to their teams.
Although cross country season is over for the year, Mills, Goldizen, and the rest of the Zag runners will start competition back up in January for indoor track. Their first meet is the UW Indoor Preview Saturday, Jan. 17.
