SEATTLE, Wash.--The Gonzaga University men's tennis team wrapped up the ITA Northwest Regional Sunday with three Bulldogs winning consolation matches at Nordstrom Tennis Center and Seattle Tennis Club in Seattle.
Senior Vicente Varas posted the biggest victory for Gonzaga, beating UW's Piers Foley handily. Varas won the first set 6-2, and he cruised to take the second set by a similar scoreline. Freshman Emilio Moreno also picked up a two-set win, beating Portland's Kent Andreasen 6-4, 7-5.
Fellow freshman Jordan Smith also ended the tournament with a win, beating Sacramento State's Uli Vollath in three sets. Smith took an early advantage by winning a tightly-played first set via tiebreak at 7-6 (4), but Vollath countered with a 3-6 decision in the second set. The Sydney native bounced back in the third set super tiebreak, however, doubling up the Hornet and winning the match 7-6 (4), 3-6, 1-0 (5)
Two more Bulldogs saw action during the final day if the ITA Northwest Regionals Sunday. Junior Ronzai Saurombe also took on a Portland player, falling to Carlos Donat 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore Connor Arend, meanwhile, lost 6-2, 6-4 to Eastern Washington's Eduardo Bringold.
"There were definitely some highlights in the tournament this weekend," said Gonzaga head coach Peter MacDonald. "We have a young team with a lot of potential. We have some work ahead of us!"
The Zags have just one more tournament left on the fall slate: their own Bulldog Classic. That competition will run Oct. 30 to Nov. 1 at The Stevens Center in Spokane.
