July 27, 2015 NEW ORLEANS -- Gonzaga's Willie Milam, Jessica Mildes, Shelby Mills, and Andy Phillips received 2015 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic recognition for the recently-completed track and field season.
The Bulldog men and women also received academic team recognition from the USTFCCCA.
Milam was recently named third team academic All-American. He graduated in May as a business administration major and had a 3.98 cumulative GPA. He completed an amazing career at Gonzaga with a 17th place finish in the men's 5,000 meters at the NCAA West Preliminary Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas, on May 30. Milam owns the program's outdoor 5,000 and 10,000-meter records, and the 3,000-meter and mile indoor records. The Portland, Ore. native also holds the fastest cross country time over an 8,000-meter course.
In her first season as a Bulldog, Mildes had an incredible breakout season. The accounting major shattered the program 5,000 and 10,000-meter records during the outdoor season. She had a 4.0 cumulative GPA.
Mills, who had a 3.3 cumulative GPA, became the first student-athlete in school history to run at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. She finished an incredible season by placing 21st in the nation in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in Eugene, Ore. She is majoring in biology.
Phillips punched his ticket to the NCAA prelims in dramatic fashion at the last meet of the season with a time of 3:43.90. The senior not only qualified, he broke the Gonzaga 1,500-meter program record. Phillips ended his GU career with a 25th-place finish at the NCAA prelims. The human physiology major had a 3.34 cumulative GPA.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
A total of 838 women from 207 institutions earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, and 529 men from 165 institutions also received the recognition.
Gonzaga's women earned All-Academic Team honors with a 3.50 GPA, one of 224 women's track and field teams honored. The Bulldog men posted a 3.13 GPA and were one of 123 teams recognized. Teams must carry a 3.00 cumulative GPA to make the list.
