CHENEY, Wash.-The Gonzaga University men's tennis team began the 2015 fall tournament season on a strong note Friday, advancing all six players in their respective singles brackets at the EWU Fall Classic in Cheney, Wash.
"The guys played well today; it's always nice when you have all your players in the main draw still after the first day," said head coach Peter MacDonald. "We have some challenging matches tomorrow but we look forward to the process."
Four Bulldogs moved on in the top singles bracket, the red draw. Freshman Jordan Smith downed Seattle U's John Stormans in straight sets 6-2, 6-3, and senior Hayden Smith beat the Redhawks' Connor Leahy 6-2, 6-2 as well. One more Zag squared off against a foe from Seattle U as freshman Emilio Moreno beat Matt Alderson 6-1, 6-4, and junior Ronzai Saurombe made his GU debut by squaring off against host Eastern Washington's Vuk Vuckovic. The two went to a first set tiebreak which Saurombe won at 7-6 (11-9), and the junior transfer won the second set 6-2.
In the black singles draw, sophomore Connor Arend and senior Vicente Varas advanced Friday. Arend beat Idaho's Peter Shin in two sets 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) in round one, and he beat SU's Brain Nguyen 6-0, 6-4 in round two. Starting in round two, Varas beat EWU's JJ Minakata 6-1, 6-2. Varas is the top seed of the black singles bracket.
In doubles play, one Bulldog pair remains in contention for the main bracket title. Smith and Smith teamed up to take down the Redhawks' pair of Alderson and Tanner Berkabile in a second round matchup and their first of the day.
Meanwhile, Saurombe and Moreno teamed up to post a first round win over Luke Ness and Eduardo Bringold of Eastern Washington at 8-4, but the pair of new Zags fell to Idaho's Odon Barta and Felipe Fonseca in round two. Also, Arend and Varas won six games in their first round doubles match, but they lost to Vuckovic and Wacil Bendjelti of EWU 8-6.
