2015 Fall Schedule
SPOKANE, Wash.-Gonzaga men's tennis head coach Peter MacDonald announced the Bulldogs' 2015 fall tournament slate Tuesday. The schedule features three tournaments, including the Zags' own Bulldog Classic in late October and early November.
"We're excited to see what talent we have for the fall, both in returners and our three incoming players,' said MacDonald. "This schedule will give us a chance to see where we're at heading into the spring duals."
The Zags' 2015-16 season will once again begin in Cheney, Wash., with the EWU Fall Classic. The yearly event will run Sept. 18-20. Last season the Bulldogs fared well in the event with then-senior Nick Kamisar winning the top singles flight and teaming up with Alvaro Nazal to take the top doubles flight.
After over a month of time in the classroom and on the practice court, the Zags will then head west for Seattle and the ITA Northwest Regionals. The regional championship, hosted by Washington this year, will begin Oct. 22 with the championship match taking place Oct. 26. Last season, Nazal made the program's deepest-ever run in the tournament, reaching the semifinals of the singles bracket.
Over the next weekend, the Zags will once again host the Bulldog Classic, which runs from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1. This is the second year of the home tournament, held at The Stevens Center on N. Superior Street just a few blocks east of campus. The Bulldog Classic will be the Zags' final tournament of the fall season.
"We're expecting another good field for the Bulldog Classic this year," MacDonald said. "There's been a lot of interest, and it'll be another great home tournament."
The 2015-16 edition of the Bulldogs will be comprised of three returning players and three newcomers. Seniors Hayden Smith and Vicente Varas will join sophomore Connor Arend as the holdovers from last season. Junior Ronzai Saurombe joins the Zags from Seward County Community College in Kansas, and freshmen Emilio Moreno and Jordan Smith will round out the roster.
