Zags Eliminated from Main Brackets at ITAs

BURLINGAME, Calif.-It was a long second day of the USTA/ITA Northwest Regionals for the Gonzaga men's tennis team Friday, one that saw both remaining individuals and doubles pairs eliminated from main bracket play.
In his Round of 32 match, freshman Vincent Rettke battled with UC Davis' Jesse Ross, forcing two set tiebreaks but falling in both. In the first set, Rettke was narrowly edged 7-5 in the tiebreak, and the second was even closer as the two competitors played 22 extra points. Ross won that breaker 12-10 to advance, ending the GU freshman's run in the main bracket.
Extra tennis isn't anything new to Rettke as he's seen 12 sets go into either an extra game or a tiebreak this fall, four of those coming at the ITAs.
Sophomore Ruadhan O'Sullivan also competed in the Round of 32 Friday, falling to Fresno State's Euan McIntosh. McIntosh entered the tournament as one of the bracket's seeded players and beat O'Sullivan in straight sets.
In the morning, two Zag duos were knocked out of the main doubles flight by a pair of top-seeded teams. Rettke and Kyle Everly lost 8-4 to the No. 1 seed from Oregon, Cormac Clissold and Thomas Laurent, while O'Sullivan and Ronzai Saurombe fell by a similar score to the Ducks' Jayson Amos and Simon Stevens. Those two make up the bracket's second seed.
Rain severely impacted day two of the regional championships, sending every contest indoors. The morning's doubles matches were played at Broadway Tennis Center in Burlingame, California, due to the weather, and the Zags' singles contests took place inside the Bay Club in San Francisco. Those started at 8:30 p.m.
No consolation matches took place Friday. Those will begin on Saturday, Oct. 15, with doubles hitting the courts at 10:00 a.m. and singles starting later. Play will again take place entirely indoors.
