USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Draws
PALO ALTO, Calif.--The Gonzaga women's tennis team began the USTA/ITA Northwest Regionals Friday, and team captain Alex Bourguignon advanced to the Round of 32 in singles play with a pair of victories at Taube Tennis Center in Palo Alto, California.
Bourguignon remains active in the main bracket after two wins over a pair of West Coast Conference foes. In the opening round, she breezed past San Francisco's Amber Del Rosario with a 6-3, 6-1 win. A few hours later, she squared off against Zeina El Tawil of Santa Clara in the Round of 64. Again, Bourguignon won the first set 6-3, and she followed it up with a 7-5 victory in the second to advance once more.
The Zags have now placed at least one player in the Round of 32 in each of the last five season. Last year, both she and Sophie Whittle made it that far. Bourguignon will square off against Stacey Fung of Washington, the bracket's No. 9 seed, on Saturday in the Round of 32.
One other Bulldog won a main singles bracket match as Haruna Tsuruta downed Andie Mouzes of Sacramento State 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round. In the second, however, the freshman lost to Washington's Kenadi Hance in straight sets to move into consolation play.
Three more Zags fell in their opening singles match of the weekend. Kate Ketels fell to San Francisco's Emily Maxfield, Graciela Rosas lost to Washington State's Barbora Michalkova, and Nevada Apollo lost to Parminder Kaur of Saint Mary's. Whittle, meanwhile, attempted to play her singles contest against the No. 6 seed Olivia Hauger of California despite falling ill overnight. She played three games before retiring.
In doubles play, one Bulldog duo advanced onto the Round of 32 as Bourguignon and Apollo combined to dominate their Sacramento State opponents by an 8-1 tally. The two Zags will face a pair from Oregon on Saturday.
Elsewhere in doubles play, Rosas and Tsuruta lost a pair from Washington State, and the team of Whittle and Ketels did not take the court due to Whittle's illness.
"Alex competed very well today," said D.J. Gurule, head coach of Gonzaga's women's tennis team. "I really liked her energy and persistence. Haruna also had a great day; she is showing that she is capable to competing with anyone. We are ready to get some more quality matches in tomorrow!"
Gonzaga continues play at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regionals on Saturday, Oct. 22. Main bracket doubles matches will begin at 9:00 a.m. while singles play gets underway an hour later, again in Palo Alto.
