Bulldogs Move into Consolation Play at ITAs

PALO ALTO, Calif.--The Gonzaga University women's tennis team continued action at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regionals Saturday, wrapping up main bracket play and transitioning into the consolation rounds at Taube Tennis Center in Palo Alto, California.
One individual and one doubles pair began the day in the tournament's main brackets. During the Singles Flight's Round of 32, Alex Bourguignon took on ninth-seeded Stacey Fung from Washington, who won in two sets. Earlier in the day, Bourguignon and doubles partner Nevada Apollo took on Oregon's Daniela Nasser and Nia Rose. The Bulldog duo won six games but the UO pair won the pro set 8-6.
In consolation play, three Zags picked up wins on Saturday with two coming against Pac-12 competition. Apollo bounced back to beat California's Alexis Nelson 6-3, 6-2. It's the third win over a Pac-12 foe in Apollo's two-year career. Freshman Haruna Tsuruta downed a Pac-12 opponent as well. She squared off against the Ducks' Nasser, winning in a tight two-setter 7-5, 7-6 (6). It was already the fifth win of Tsuruta's season.
Also picking up a win Saturday, Kate Ketels downed Santa Clara's Zeina El Tawil in two sets, taking the first in a tiebreak and doubling up the Bronco in the second. She's the second Bulldog to beat El Tawil this weekend after Bourguignon prevailed in the Round of 64.
During consolation doubles, Ketels and Sophie Whittle won their first match of the weekend, besting Fresno State's Georgia Lawson and Juliane Triebe 8-6. Tsuruta and Graciela Rosas fell to a pair from Washington by a similar score.
Gonzaga will wrap up play at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regionals on Sunday, Oct. 23, with the final round of consolation play. Those matches will again take place at Taube Tennis Center on the Stanford University campus.
