USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Draws
PALO ALTO, Calif.-It was a solid end to the USTA/ITA Northwest Regionals Sunday as the Gonzaga University women's tennis team came away with five wins at Taube Tennis Center in Palo Alto, California.
The Zags began the day with a full complement of doubles matches, and two Gonzaga pairs walked away victorious. Sophie Whittle and Kate Ketels posted the big win, downing Washington's Katarina Kopcalic and Lana Slavica by an 8-3 tally. The duo of Alex Bourguignon and Nevada Apollo also ended the regional tournament with a high note, beating a pair from Fresno State 8-6.
During singles play in the afternoon, three Zags once again prevailed. Ketels and Haruna Tsuruta each picked up straight-set wins against West Coast Conference competition as Tsuruta beat Saint Mary's' Parminder Kaur 6-4, 6-3, while Ketels downed Pacific's Cristina Saenz De Buruaga Ruiz in consecutive 6-3 frames. Tsuruta ended the weekend with three victories in Palo Alto while Ketels won twice.
Bourguignon capped off a four-win weekend Sunday with a three-setter. The team's lone upperclassman, she beat UC Davis' Lani-Rae Green 6-1 in the first set while the Aggie evened the match with a 4-6 tally in the second. In the third set super tiebreak, Bourguignon won the race to 10 points to clinch the match. She's now claimed five singles victories this fall.
A pair of sophomores also went to three sets Sunday as Apollo and Graciela Rosas each won the middle frame before losing the super tiebreak. Apollo dropped a 6-2, 0-6, 1-0 (6) decision to Gaelle Rey of San Jose State, and Rosas fell 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (2) to Cal Poly's Susanne Boyden.
"This weekend was a good opportunity for us to get quality matches," said Gonzaga head coach D.J. Gurule. "Overall it was a positive tournament, but we have a lot of things we need to work on. We are looking forward to hosting two more tournaments this fall."
Gonzaga will now return home for two tournaments inside The Stevens Center to finish the fall season. They'll first face the Bulldog Invite from Nov. 4-6 before wrapping up the tournament slate a week later at the Gonzaga Invitational.
