SPOKANE, Wash.--The Gonzaga University women's tennis team used home court advantage to great effect Friday, winning 11 of its 12 matches during day one of their own Bulldog Invite at The Stevens Center.
Two Zags picked up strong 6-0, 6-1 wins to open their first home tournament. In the C Singles flight, freshman Haruna Tsuruta blew by Seattle U's Kali McCollister, and fellow newcomer Katie Day did the same in the F Singles bracket. The wins were the biggest of their young careers.
Alex Bourguignon also saw an impressive win margin Friday, beating Audrey Scott of Seattle U 6-1, 6-1 in Flight D. It's the junior's fifth win of the tournament season.
In the top two flights, Sophie Whittle picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Idaho State's Hristina Cvetkovic to open A Singles. In the B flight, Nevada Apollo ceded just three games en route to a 6-0, 6-3 win. She downed SU's Barbara Carey for the win, her fourth of the fall.
Sophomores Domonique Garley and Graciela Rosas, meanwhile, played in the E Singles bracket, and both came away with wins. Garley downed Kristen Newell of Idaho State 6-2, 6-0, and Rosas won with a 6-1, 6-2 scoreline over Montana's Stanzi Stuijt. The pair both move onto the bracket's semifinals, but they're on opposite sides of the flight: Rosas will play Marta Heinen of Eastern Washington while Garley squares off against Idaho's Shion Watabe Saturday.
Joining Tsuruta in the C Flight, fellow newcomer Kate Ketels fell behind early in her first set against Megan Poe of Idaho State but roared back for the win. Down 2-5, Ketels ripped off five consecutive games to take the first frame 7-5, and she took the second 6-2 in order to advance.
Three of the team's four doubles matches advanced in their flights as well. In A Doubles, Whittle and Ketels advanced with a 6-2 victory over a pair from Portland State. Apollo and Garley breezed by an Idaho State duo 6-0 in B Doubles, and in C, Bourguignon and Rosas also swept a mixed team from Idaho State and Seattle U.
Day and Tsuruta were the only Bulldogs to lose a doubles contest, falling 6-4 to a squad from Eastern Washington.
The Zags will continue play at the Bulldog Invite on Saturday, Nov. 5, again at The Stevens Center. The day will begin with doubles play at 8:30 a.m.
