WTEN Wraps Solid First Day at SMU Invite

DALLAS - The Gonzaga women's tennis team wrapped up action in solid form on Day One at the SMU Invitational on Friday in Dallas, Texas. The tournament is the first of the fall season for GU.
Five of the eight GU singles players advanced to the second round, while three of four doubles pairs collected victories as well.
The sophomore trio of Sophie Whittle, Nevada Apollo and Graciela Rosas each took straight-set wins for the Zags. Whittle took down Abilene Christian's Lucile Pothier 6-2, 7-6, Apollo defeated Astrid Gehre of UTA 6-1, 6-2, and Rosas made quick work of Dasha Sharapova of SMU 6-1, 6-2.
Freshmen Kate Ketels and Haruna Tsuruta each brought home victories as well. Ketels battled through a three-set, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory, and Tsuruta capped off a straight-set with a tight second set 6-1, 7-6.
Gonzaga was equally as successful in doubles, led by the team of Domonique Garley and Ketels, who defeated Kansas State's Palma Juhasz and Carolina Costamagna 6-3. Alex Bourguignon and Rosas also teamed up for a win over Judit Vives and Alexandra Bella of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 6-4.
The Zags will be back on the courts at the SMU Tennis Complex, Turpin Stadium & Brookshire Family Pavilion on Saturday morning for the second day of the three-day, 14-team tournament in Dallas, Texas.
