Bulldogs See Plenty of Success on Day Two in Texas

DALLAS -- The Gonzaga University women's tennis team continued a strong season-opening SMU Invite Saturday as five individuals and two doubles pairs advanced to their respective brackets finals.
"We were really happy with how we competed today," said Gonzaga women's tennis head coach D.J. Gurule. "We still see some things we need to work on, but all in all we put ourselves in great positions today. We are excited to finish the tournament on a high note."
Four of those five individuals advanced with two-set semifinals wins Saturday. Sophie Whittle downed UTSA's Miriam Rosell Canudas in consecutive 7-5 sets, while Nevada Apollo also played extra tennis in her first set, winning that in a tiebreak at 7-6 before her foe retired. Two freshmen -- Kate Ketels and Haruna Tsuruta -- topped their foes in two sets on just their second day of competitive collegiate tennis; Ketels at 6-4, 6-2 over a foe from Incarnate Word and Tsuruta 6-2, 6-1 against a player from Marquette.
Graciela Rosas also reached the final of her bracket, coming back from a set deficit to down T.J. Fumagalli of Air Force 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
In addition to the plethora of Bulldogs still active in main brackets, two Zags reached consolation finals. Freshman Katie Day reached her consolation final after a strong 6-4, 6-0 win over Incarnate Word's Rachel Sadiq, and junior Alex Bourguignon downed Kansas State's Iva Bago 6-4, 6-3 for her ticket forward as well.
In pairs play, Ketels and Domonique Garley stormed past a team from SMU by a 6-1 tally Saturday, reaching their bracket's final. Gonzaga's most experienced doubles pair -- Bourguignon and Rosas -- also earned a finals berth, doubling up ACU's Lucile Pothier and Autumn Crossnoe 6-3 in the semis.
Whittle and Apollo, meanwhile, advanced to their consolation final, bypassing a duo from UTSA.
The Zags will end the SMU Invite on Sunday, Oct. 9, with the tournament final rounds. Doubles play will begin at 7:00 a.m. Pacific (9:00 a.m. Central) at the SMU Tennis Complex.
