SPOKANE, Wash.-The Gonzaga women's tennis team saw a strong day two of the Gonzaga Invitational Saturday, picking up two doubles wins and five singles victories inside The Stevens Center.
In doubles play, two Bulldog pairs claimed victory, and Nevada Apollo and Domonique Garley mounted a comeback for theirs. The duo's opponents, Maria Tavares and Ana Batiri of Idaho, won the match's first three games, but the Zags fought back and took the next six for the win. It's the pair's second of the weekend and fourth of the fall.
Alex Bourguignon and Graciela Rosas also claimed up a doubles victory, downing the Vandals' Claire Yang and Shion Watabe 6-4. That was the duo's fifth win of the tournament season. Sophie Whittle and Kate Ketels, meanwhile, fell in an extra game to UI's Marianna Petrei and Lucia Badillos.
During singles play, five Zags ended the day with a match win. Rosas posted the day's biggest win with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 score over Portland's Kara Okazaki, and Ketels followed up with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over her Pilot foe. Whittle also closed out her opponent in two sets, downing Radina Dimitrova 7-5, 6-1.
Two Bulldog players fought back from one-set deficits for their singles wins. Apollo turned aside a 4-6 first set from Jelena Lazarevic, rallying to a 6-0 score in the second and 6-2 win in the third. Haruna Tsuruta, meanwhile, lost her first set via a tiebreak but came back to down Emily Soares 6-7 (5), 6-3, 1-0 (5).
Freshman Katie Day saw her first singles match of the tournament Saturday, squaring off against Oregon's Daniela Nasser. Down 3-0 in the first, Day rallied to win four games in the set, but it wasn't enough as she lost the match 6-4, 6-1. Bourguignon also started a singles match but was forced to retire due to illness.
The Bulldogs will wrap up both the Gonzaga Invitational and their fall tournament season on Sunday, November 13, with the competition's final day. Doubles will begin at 11:30 a.m. and singles will start one hour later, again at The Stevens Center.
