LAHAINA, Hawaii -- Three Gonzaga men's golfers finished under-par in the last round of the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational Sunday. The Zags completed their fall schedule in an 11th place tie in the tournament.
Gonzaga's 276 (-8) total in the third and final round ranks as the third-lowest in program history. It's GU's lowest round since the Bulldogs finished with a 274 in the 2014 Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational. This year's 858 (+6) tournament total is the fifth-lowest 54-hole score in the history of the program.
"We had five solid rounds today along with our best round of the year and that's a great way to end the season," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "We showed that we could beat some great teams for one round by beating three Top-40 teams and just three-back of the seventh-ranked team. We just need to be able to do it for three rounds."
David Ganz carded a 67 (-4) Sunday, which matches his career-low round and the fourth-lowest in GU history. He played bogey-free golf in the final round, making four birdies and 14 pars. The junior was three-under on the front-nine and one-under on the back. He finished in a tie for 17th at four-under (209).
Ryan Gaske tied for 36th at one-over (214). He also had 14 pars in Round 3, along with two birdies. The senior finished at even-par (71) in the third round. Gaske's 39 pars were the second-most in the 132-golfer field.
Angus Montgomery was right behind at three-over (216) for the tournament in a tie for 44th place. He was three-under (68) on Day 3. Montgomery had four of his six birdies on the front-nine.
Ben DuBois carded a career-low round of 70 (-1) on the final day. He had a team-high seven birdies in the last round to finish the tournament at six-over (219). The junior tied for 68th. Nick Nolan had his lowest round of tournament Sunday, finishing with a 72 (+1). The freshman was 20-over (233) in 121st place.
"David put together a great round today," Gray said. "He played the course without a bogey and made some great par saves. Angus finished very strong, playing his final four holes in three-under par for a 68. Ryan continued his consistent play with another even-par round. Ben posted another good round, posting better rounds each day. Nick found his game again and posted a score of 72, which is more in line with how he usually plays.
"The fourth score definitely made a big difference in our finish this week but we achieved our goal today of having everyone play well and posting our best round of the year. We know move into our off-season where the guys can take a much needed break after competing since January. We'll get it in some practice again after Thanksgiving and work hard to do well with our academics before heading home for the semester break."
Clemson's Doc Redman led the Tigers to a first place finish. He carded a 64 (-7) in Round 3, and ended the event at 15-under (198). Sam Burns of LSU placed second at 13-under (200). Clemson (-26, 826) edged out Georgia by one stroke for the team title.
