Feb. 27, 2016

Box Score

PROVO, Utah-The Gonzaga University men's tennis team kicked off a five-game road swing Saturday at West Coast Conference foe BYU, falling to the 58th-ranked Cougars 4-0 at the on-campus Indoor Tennis Courts in Provo, Utah.

The Cougars took an early advantage by winning the doubles point. At the top doubles slot, Hayden Smith and Jordan Smith suffered just their second loss on the dual season, falling to BYU's Jeremy Bourgeois and Aidan Carrazedo 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Vicente Varas and Connor Arend took three games but fell 6-3 to John Pearce and Jacob Sullivan.

In the middle doubles contest, Ruadhan O'Sullivan and Emilio Moreno also won three games before their doubles contest was halted and left unfinished.

In singles, BYU won the only three matches that finished. In the first to finish, Moreno played up his second consecutive match at No. 4 singles, falling to Sullivan 6-3, 6-2. He had entered the contest having won two singles matches in a row and three of his last four.

O'Sullivan also saw a winning streak snapped as he lost 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. The Cherrybrook, Australia, native had won each of his last four singles contests and only dropped one match all dual season before Saturday.

At No. 2 singles, Jordan Smith won eight total games, but it wasn't quite enough as he fell to Andrey Goryachkov in straight 6-4, 6-4 sets. The point clinched the match for BYU.

Hayden Smith's No. 1 singles contest was halted at that point and left unfinished. Smith pushed Shane Monroe into a first set tiebreak, but fell in the extra portion.

The Bulldogs (2-6, 0-3 WCC) will wrap up their weekend in the Beehive State Sunday, Feb. 28 with a contest at Utah State. That dual will begin at 12:00 p.m. Pacific (1:00 p.m. Mountain) in Logan, Utah.
