WROW Wraps up Solid Weekend at San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO - Gonzaga's 18th-ranked women's rowing team earned solid finishes on Sunday at the San Diego Crew Classic.
Gonzaga finished in the top six in each of the three grand finals across the eights, and pulled in a second-place finish in the petite finals of the Varsity 4.
"It was challenging racing today after the fog with a crosswind that was increasing, but all things considered, it was a really strong weekend," head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "The highlight of the day for us again was the Second Varsity 8. They really showed they are a Top-20 2V and rowed a really strong race today, running neck-and-neck with USC right up to the finish."
In the Varsity 8, GU was sixth, edging out West Coast Conference rival San Diego by one second and 20th-ranked UCLA by eight seconds. The Zags finished in a time of 7:01.89.
Both the Second Varsity 8 and the Open 8 pulled in fourth-place finishes in their grand finals. The 2V8 turned in a time of 7:07.48, ahead of Wisconsin and Washington State while just four-tenths of a second behind USC.
The Open 8 turned in a time of 7:26.25 for their fourth-place finish, just under six seconds out of third and well ahead of fifth place.
The Varsity 4 had a solid bounceback day on the 2,000-meter course, finishing with a time of 7:54.64 to place second in the petite final.

"We are excited to get back to work and keep getting faster," Putyrae said. "This weekend was a lot of learning, and I think we all came out of it seeing some things we can do better."
Gonzaga will be back in competition in two weeks at the two-day Lake Natoma Invitational in Sacramento, Calif. Racing will begin at 9 a.m. on April 16-17.
