Zags Remain Unbeaten with Sweep over Montana

SPOKANE, Wash.-The Gonzaga University women's tennis team remained unbeaten on the 2017 dual season after a 7-0 sweep over Montana Friday night at The Stevens Center.
Gonzaga opened the match with a pair of big doubles victories. Moving up to court one, Nevada Apollo and Domonique Garley quickly dispatched their Montana opponents 6-1, and Haruna Tsuruta and Kate Ketels won 6-2 on court three. The second doubles match, between Alex Bourguignon/Graciela Rosas and Lidia Dukic/Milica Panic, was halted and left unfinished with the Zag pair up 5-3.
Garley and Ketels carried over their doubles success to singles action. On court six, Garley quickly swept Panic 6-0 in the first set and won the second at 6-1. Up one court, at No. 5 singles, Ketels downed Ana Carbo 6-0, 6-2. Both Zags remained undefeated on the dual season at 4-0.
Tsuruta once again picked up the clinching point, although in much less dramatic fashion than her winner against Idaho Feb. 17. Friday night, the Gonzaga freshman downed Montana's Cat Orfanos in straight 6-1 sets for her 14th win of the year. On court four, Bourguignon brushed aside Nathalie Joanlanne 6-1, 6-2.
On the top two courts, Apollo and Rosas completed the sweep with competitive two-set wins. Apollo picked up her first-ever win at No. 1 singles, downing Hannah Sulz 7-6 (1), 6-3. On court two, Rosas beat Dukic 7-5, 6-3 for her first career win at that position.
"We wanted to make sure we stayed focused on Montana," said Gonzaga head coach D.J. Gurule, "and we did a really good job of that tonight, from doubles to singles. Throughout the match, we stayed focused, didn't take anything for granted, and played point-by-point."
In addition to remaining undefeated (5-0), the Bulldogs picked up their third sweep of the season. Their first two came on Feb. 10 and Feb. 11.
The Bulldogs will wrap up their season-opening homestand on Sunday, Feb. 26, with a showdown against Utah State. That contest will begin at 10:00 a.m. at The Stevens Center.
