BANDON, Ore. -- Gonzaga men's golf's Ryan Gaske is tied for 19th after the second round of the Bandon Dunes Championship. He carded a 73 (+1) in Round 2 on the Old MacDonald Course at the Bandon Dunes Resort Monday.
The Bulldogs are in 14th place at 24-over (600). Gonzaga totaled a 308 (+20) in Round 2.
"The wind kicked up to a range of 15 to 20 miles-per-hour today making the course more difficult than yesterday," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "To put it in perspective, we had 19 birdies from our starting five players yesterday and only five birdies today. The wind made it more difficult to get the ball close to the hole for good birdie opportunities. If you're not making birdies, then you can't be making a lot of bogies and we had 23 just from the counting four players (along with one double bogey).
"Playing in the wind, we had today to avoid making those little mistakes that lead to bogey after bogey and we weren't able to do it. We slipped a little bit with how we carry ourselves mentally and it's in these types of conditions where it's so critical to be mentally strong the entire round. Tomorrow is predicted to be much the same as today with possibly stronger winds. Pars are good when the wind is up and we need to get into that type of mental state in order to stay off the bogey trains we had today."
After his 71 (-1) in the first round, Gaske made 15 pars on the second day, the most in the round in the 90-golfer field. He has 22 pars entering the final round. The senior is even-par (144) following the first two rounds.
David Ganz and Nick Nolan are five-over (149) and six-over (150). Ganz is tied for 44th after a 76 (+4) Monday. Nolan is just a stroke behind. The freshman was seven-over (79) in Round 2.
"Individually, Ryan put together a solid round today and has himself in a respectable position going into the final round tomorrow," Gray said. "David had a good round going today being even with four to play, but those final four holes derailed his round. Nick was hanging in there until a four-hole stretch during his final six holes took away a good score in today's conditions."
Playing as individuals, Ben DuBois (T61st) and Tyler Munetake (T68th) had rounds of 80 (+8) and 81 (+9) on Day 2. DuBois is eight-over (152) in the tournament, while Munetake is nine-over (153).
Chris Mogg and Angus Montgomery rounded out GU play. Mogg (T83rd) was also eight-over (80) in the second round, and has a two-day total of 158 (+14). Montgomery is in 90th at 18-over (162). He was 13-over (85) in the second round.
Oregon remains atop the team leaderboard. The Ducks are 16-under (560) after two rounds. They were three-under (285) as a team Monday. Texas Tech is in second at six-under. The Red Raiders are led by Hannes Ronneblad, who is in first on the individual leaderboard at eight-under (136). He has a one-stroke lead over Oregon's Ryan Gronlund.
"Tomorrow we need to be more patient and calm-minded when adversity strikes, and it will on this course," Gray said. "But it's how we handle it that makes a huge difference. Our freshmen are making freshmen mistakes. Our upperclassmen have the experience to handle these conditions and we need them to do so tomorrow."
The third and final round begins Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
