Gonzaga sweeps Santa Clara for Undefeated Weekend

SPOKANE, Wash. - It was déjà vu for Gonzaga women's tennis as the Zags swept Santa Clara 4-0 Sunday morning at The Stevens Center.
The dual was their second consecutive sweep after downing San Francisco on March 25. This weekend marked the first time the Zags won dual matches against both San Francisco and Santa Clara in the same season under head coach D.J. Gurule.
For the second time in as many days, Gonzaga duos Sophie Whittle/Graciela Rosas and Haruna Tsuruta/Kate Ketels secured the doubles victory for the Zags. Whittle and Rosas put together a dominant performance on court two, defeating Santa Clara's Nabila Farah and Caitlyn Frankel 6-0. Tsuruta and Ketels then clinched the point with a 6-2 win over the Broncos' Zeina El Tawil and Giannina Ong on court two.
Domonique Garley opened singles play with a win at No. 6 singles for Gonzaga, defeating Ong in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. With the victory Garley pushed her singles win streak to nine and remained undefeated in dual play.
Ketels extended her double-digit win streak and picked up the Zags' second singles victory on court five. After a tight first set that saw Ketels edge out a 6-4 victory over Frankel, Ketels too dominated the second set with a convincing 6-0 win to clinch the victory. The freshman from Kalamazoo, Mich., has 19 singles wins on the season.
Rosas clinched the sweep for the Zags on court three with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Farah. The sophomore has won 13 out of her last 14 matches.
With the sweep of Santa Clara, the Zags move to 11-1 on the year and 2-0 in conference play. Gonzaga will start a three-match road trip at San Diego, Calif. on March 30, 2017 against San Diego before heading to Provo, Utah, and Portland, Ore., for matches against BYU and Portland. The Bulldogs return to The Stevens Center on April 14, 2017, when they battle Saint Mary's at 12:00 p.m.
