Gonzaga Starts Season with Solid Showing

Zags' Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight Get Wins
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's rowing team opened their 2018-19 season by hosting Washington State in the annual Head of the Spokane on the Spokane River Saturday.
With mild increasing tailwind into the morning on a beautiful fall day, the Zags opened their schedule very well on a course that was setup at 5,000 meters.
The Zags' varsity eight boat started the day with a five-second win over WSU at 15:40. The second GU varsity eight crossed the line at 16:49, eight seconds ahead of the Cougars. Washington State's varsity four boat had a six-second victory over the Bulldogs, finishing at 19:23. Gonzaga raced two third varsity eight boats coming in first and third at 15:37 and 16:42.
"This is a really young group and I thought they handled their business well," Gonzaga Head Coach Dan Gehn said. "WSU pressured both boats in the middle of the course, but they battled them off and moved well down the stretch."
Gonzaga faces Washington State again next Saturday at the Head of the Spokane at Wawawai Landing in Pullman. Races begin at 9 a.m.
