Zags and Cougars race for second straight weekend
PULLMAN, Wash. – In rough and windy conditions on the Snake River, the Gonzaga men's rowing team raced against Washington State in the annual Head of the Snake Saturday.
The year's edition of the annual regatta at Wawawai Landing featured choppy waters and wind around 10-12 miles per hour. Wind cancelled last year's regatta, along with the event in 2011 and 2013.
Despite difficult conditions, the Zags' combination of Second Varsity and First Novice 8 had the fastest time over the 5,000-meter course in Flight 1. GU's winning time of 21:03, was just ahead of Washington State's Second Varsity 8 second place finish at 21:41.
Gonzaga's Second Varsity 4 crossed the line at 19:59, ahead of WSU's Varsity 4 finish of 20:21. The Bulldogs' Varsity 4 was third with a time of 20:22, while GU's Third Varsity 4 finished at 20:51.
Flight 2 was shortened to 2,350 meters and the Zags' Second Varsity First Novice 8 combination had the winning time of 8:41. Gonzaga's First Varsity 4 and Second Varsity 4 both crossed the line at 8:16.
"I'm pleased with how all the boats handled the conditions," Gonzaga Head Coach Dan Gehn said. "It was much windier and rougher than we expected. It was good experience for a very young group!"
Next Saturday, Gonzaga travels to the Head of the American in Sacramento, Calif.
