Zags place ninth as a team at 19-over
SIMI VALLEY, Calif. – Gonzaga men's golfers Chris Mogg and Matthew Ruel both tied for 29th at the Bill Cullum Invitational Tuesday. The Zags came in ninth place as a team at the Wood Ranch Golf Club.
Mogg and Ruel both finished the tournament at three-over (219). Mogg was even-par (72) in his final round, while Ruel was two-under (70). Mogg's final round featured four birdies and an eagle on the Par-5 sixth hole. Ruel made five birdies and 11 pars in the third and final round. Mogg made a team-high 34 pars in the tournament. Ruel was six-under (4.50) on the course's Par-5 holes, while Mogg was five-under (4.58).
Freshman Brentt Salas carded a 73 (+1) in the third round, and finished the event seven-over (223) in a tie for 52nd. He made three birdies and 11 pars in the final round.
Tyler Munetake (T68th) and Nick Nolan (T72nd) were 11-over (227) and 13-over (229). Nolan was three-over (75) in Round 3, while Munetake was seven-over (83). Nolan made two birdies and 14 pars in the final round, and Munetake made 12 pars. Munetake was also six-under (4.50) on Par-5 holes.
Gonzaga had its best round of the tournament Tuesday. The Bulldogs were two-over (290) in Round 3. GU finished 19-over (883).
"Great effort by the guys today," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "We got off to a terrible start, dropping from eighth to 13th at one point then battled hard down the stretch to get to seventh and ultimately ending up in ninth. I can't be more proud of how they fought back. In the past we've kept falling after a bad start the final day and finished towards the bottom, so this is a big step forward for us.
"Chris and Matt were the most consistent this week, which is something we've been missing so far this fall. Statistically, we've been making plenty of birdies to finish consistently in the top five in all of our events but we're making too many doubles, triples and others. Obviously, birdies are great but when your losing all the hard work of three birdies with a triple on one hole, it's impossible to keep up with the teams at the top of the leader board. So we just need to eliminate those big numbers and keep doing the other things we're doing well."
Boise State took the team title at 21-under (843). The Broncos were led by Brian Humphreys medalist finish. Humphreys was 11-under (205) in the tournament, after going six-under (66) in the third round. Two golfers finished in second at eight-under (208).
Gonzaga closes its fall schedule at the annual Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic from Nov. 2-4. The Zags return to the Royal Ka'anapali Course in Lahaina, Hawaii, for the prestigious event. Live scoring from the three-day tournament will be available on GolfStat, with links on GoZags.com.
