SPOKANE, Wash. – For the third straight season, the Gonzaga men's rowing team will bring Varsity 8 boats to the Head of the American in Sacramento, Calif.
The Bulldogs return to Lake Natoma, where they have competed annually in the Western Sprints and the previously named Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championship as part of their regional postseason competition preceding the IRA Championships.
The event is held at Nimbus Flat State Park and racing takes place on Lake Natoma and features over 60 rowing clubs in attendance. The course will be setup at 5,000 meters.
"This should be a good race opportunity for us," Gonzaga Head Coach Dan Gehn said. "The Varsity 8 is starting third right behind University of San Diego, who is in our conference championship. The JV 8 is back further in the pack and will have a chance to pass a few boats."
Last year at the regatta, the Bulldogs put down a quality performance, taking fifth in a field of 31 boats. GU crossed the line at 16:15.8, two spots better than its 2016 seventh-place finish.
Last week, in rough and windy conditions on the Snake River, the Zags raced against Washington State in the annual Head of the Snake. Despite difficult conditions, the Gonzaga combination of Second Varsity and First Novice 8 had the fastest time over the 5,000-meter course in Flight 1. GU's winning time of 21:03, was just ahead of Washington State's Second Varsity 8 second place finish at 21:41.
Both Gonzaga boats are scheduled in the 1:30 p.m. race Saturday. Live video and results will be available with links on GoZags.com.
