Gonzaga shuts out Saint Mary’s at home
SPOKANE, Wash. – India Jencks scored and recorded an assist in a 3-0 Gonzaga women's soccer victory over Saint Mary's at Luger Field Sunday.
The Zags (8-3-2, 3-1-0 West Coast Conference) won their third straight conference game, and are unbeaten in six of their last seven contests. It's the first time GU has won three consecutive conference games since 2014, when the Bulldogs opened league play, 3-0. With Sunday's win, Gonzaga also moved into a tie for second place in the league standings.
Jencks opened the scoring in the 11th minute. She dribbled up the sideline and then kicked in a shot from the corner of the box, that slid in past the keeper on the near post. It was Jencks' fifth goal of the season and the 13th in her career, which ranks eighth in program history.
Less than three minutes later, Ariana Pumpelly struck a shot from well outside the box to the upper right hand corner of the net. In her 64th appearance as a Zag, it was the senior defender's first collegiate goal and points.
Brooke Weedman scored her first collegiate goal in the 54th minute. Jencks made a pass to McKenna Ferrera, who slid a ball through the SMC defense right to the feet of Weedman. The junior then kicked in a shot past the Gaels' goalkeeper.
Gonzaga outshot Saint Mary's, 15-10, but both teams finished with five shots on goal. Jencks took a game-high four shots, while Kailana Kaeo took three shots for the Gaels (6-6-2, 1-2-1 WCC).
Drew Williams, who substituted in for GU in the second half, made three saves, while Isabel Jones made two saves in 64 minutes in the Bulldog net.
After a week off, the Zags return to the road for matches at San Francisco and Santa Clara on Oct. 19 and 21. USF shutout Loyola Marymount, 1-0, Sunday. San Francisco (8-5-1, 1-1-1) hosts Pacific on Oct. 14, before welcoming Gonzaga.
