Zags’ Men’s Rowing Closes Fall Slate in Seattle

Gonzaga returns to the Head of the Lake Sunday

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's rowing team finishes its fall schedule at the 39th annual Head of the Lake in Seattle Sunday.

The event, co-hosted by the University of Washington and Lake Washington Rowing Club, features a three-mile course, which starts in Lake Union, crosses Portage Bay, runs through the Montlake Cut and finishes in Union Bay of Lake Washington.

Last year, the weather made for difficult conditions on the lake and the Montlake Cut. The varsity eight started the day, coming in at 16:46.183 in fourth place, ahead of boats from Washington State, Western Washington, and Oregon. The second varsity eight came home at 17:32.617, also in fourth place, beating the boat from Oregon.

The Zags entered two boats in the third varsity eight race. The GU boats came in fifth and sixth, with times of 18:08.673 and 18:48.014, respectively.

This year, the Bulldogs have entered varsity eight boat, a second varsity eight boat, and a third varsity eight boat.

"We are looking forward to the racing this weekend," GU Head Coach Dan Gehn said. "There is good quality competition ahead of us and behind us on the race course, so it should make for good racing. The Head of the Lake is always an adventure and it looks the weather will be in full swing again this year."

Last week, Gonzaga's 'A' boat placed third at the Head of the American in Sacramento, Calif. The Zags' Varsity 8 boat finished the 5,000-meter course at 16:00.5. The Bulldogs' 'B' boat finished in 11th at 17:04.2.

The Bulldogs begin racing Sunday, with the varsity eight at 8 a.m. The second varsity eight follows at 8:03, and the third varsity eight races at 8:12. Live results will be available with a link on GoZags.com.
