Last Meeting: Nov. 30, 2017; Gonzaga won 69-45 in Spokane.
Series Notes: Gonzaga and Eastern Washington meet for the 46th time in program history and the 34th-straight season. The two programs began the series in 1982 and have met annually since 1986. Eastern Washington was dominant in the first few meetings as the Eagles won seven of the first eight games. Gonzaga took over the series in 1991 and have only lost six games in the last 27 years. During the current win streak of 14 games, the Bulldogs have won by an average of 16.9 points per game while averaging over 77 points per contest.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES:
- Eastern Washington returns three starters and eight letter winners from last season's squad that finished 17-14 overall with a 12-6 mark in Big Sky Conference play. The Eagles lost last season's leading scorer Delaney Hodgins to graduation; Hodgins led the Eagles and ranked second in the Big Sky last season with 22.3 points per game.
- The Eagles were picked to finish fifth by media and seventh by coaches in the Big Sky this season.
- Notable returners for EWU are: Violet Kapri Morrow, Brittany Klaman, Uriah Howard, Alissa Sealby and Amira Chandler. Kapri Morrow ranked second on the squad last season with 14.7 points per contest shooting and tied for second with Howard in rebounds per contest with 4.7. Klaman was a solid contributor with 4.4 points per game and 2.9 assists per contest which ranked second on the squad. Sealby and Chandler are both returning seniors who add depth to the Eagles roster.
- Last season, EWU averaged 67.7 points per game shooting 41.6 percent from the floor and 31.0 percent from long range. The Eagles added an average of 35.2 rebounds per game and 13.2 assists per contest to go along with 10.4 steals and 3.8 blocks per game.
- Eastern Washington is 11-9 in home openers in the last 20 season; two of those home-opening losses have been to Gonzaga.
SHARING THE RESPONSIBILITY:
Though Gonzaga has just one official game under its belt this season, it has become clear early that the Bulldogs are embracing the idea of team basketball. Four Zags scored in double-figures in their season-opener: Jill Townsend (14); Katie Campbell (13); Laura Stockton (13) and Zykera Rice (11). The Bulldogs are also sharing the rebounding effort as every Zag that played at least 15 minutes had two boards. Rice led the rebounding effort with nine while Chandler Smith and Townsend each has six. Another shared stat is minutes played; no Zag saw the floor more than 29 minutes on Wednesday, with Jessie Loera logging a team-high 29. Having a deep bench and solid reserves will help the Zags maintain their endurance throughout the season.
NATIONALLY RANKED ATTENDANCE:
- Following Gonzaga's home-opener against Montana on Nov. 7 that saw 5,472 strong in the McCarthey Athletic Center, the Zags rank sixth nationally in average attendance.
