GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The Zags raced across Lake Natoma eight times on Saturday as part of the Lake Natoma Invitational.

To start the day, the varsity four finished at 7:39.3, three seconds ahead of Sacramento State and behind No. 2 Cal and (RV) Notre Dame. The second varsity eight finished in the same spot at 6:52.3. The Zags' varsity eight was runner-up, edging Notre Dame (RV) at 6:33.0. No. 2 Cal won the varsity eight race. GU's second varsity four came in third at 7:49.4, comfortably ahead of Sacramento State and behind Cal and No. 8 Brown. For the varsity eight and second varsity four it marked their fastest times this spring.

The Bulldogs made some lineup switches between their varsity four and second varsity eight for the afternoon. The varsity four recorded another third place spot at 7:38.8, beating West Coast Conference rival San Diego by over 50 seconds. Cal and Brown took the first two spots. The second varsity eight beat USD by three seconds at 6:55.8, with Cal and Brown taking the top spots. The Zags' top boat then beat USD by 19 seconds at 6:41.4, behind Cal and Brown. The second varsity four wrapped the day behind Alabama but ahead of Sac State at 7:50.5 in the Petite Final.

"There was some great racing today and all of our crews gained some valuable experience on the race course," Gonzaga head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "We took advantage of the format and made some lineup changes, and were able to get some more information that we think will help us later in the season. We look forward to another run down the course tomorrow and hope to find more speed in our NCAA crews."

The Bulldogs are slotted against Alabama, Sac State, and USD on Sunday with the varsity four at 8:10 am, the second varsity eight at 8:30 am, and the top squad at 8:50 am.
