MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. - The (RV) Gonzaga Bulldogs faced No. 15 Washington State on Saturday outside of Spokane on Silver Lake in Medical Lake, Wash. in the Fawley Cup.

The Cougars were able to sweep the races and claim the Fawley Cup. The boats battled a 10-12 mph cross tail wind and rowed through light chop the first 1000 meters that got progressively heavier during the second 1000 meters.

The Zags' varsity eight finished at 6:29.66, five seconds behind WSU, and recorded their fastest time of the spring. The second varsity eight lost by 10 seconds at 6:51.96. The varsity four also recorded their top time this spring at 7:21.53, five seconds behind WSU.

The second varsity four had their top time as well at 7:42.27, 15 seconds off the pace of the two Cougar boats. The Gonzaga novice eight finished at 7:13.11 after catching an overhead crab in their race, resulting in a 17-second WSU win.

"We had some boats that continued to make progress today," Gonzaga head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "While we are certainly disappointed in the results, we are not disappointed in how we competed. We prepared well and just lost to a faster team today."

Next up for the Zags is the West Coast Conference Championships on May 12 on Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif. with a berth to the NCAA Championships on the line. GU will be looking for their 17th WCC Championship and fifth trip to the NCAA Championships.
