Just four strokes back of lead
ANACONDA, Mont. - Gonzaga freshman Quynn Duong finished second in her first career collegiate tournament on Tuesday morning at the Battle at Old Works at Old Works Golf Club.
She also fired GU's first under-par round of the year, with a one-under 71. She birdied holes number two and three to go one over on the front, but rolled home three birdies on the back to go two under and finish +7.
Francesca Santoni shot a 76 on Tuesday to finish in ninth place, her second career top-10 finish with a final score of +14. Jessica Mangrobang finished tied for 29th with a final round 77 to finish +25.
"This was a good tournament for us to ease into the season," Gonzaga head coach Brad Rickel said. "Everyone got to go to a part of the country and a course they had never seen. We expect great things from Quynn and she showed why we believe she is going to be an excellent college golfer. She struggled on the greens a little in the first round or she would have won her first-ever college tournament."
The Zags finished in sixth place as a team at +76, just five strokes out of fourth place. Eastern Washington won the team title at +44 in a playoff. Alexa Clark of EWU was the individual champion at +3.
The Zags finished fourth in the field with 25 birdies and Duong led the field with 10 herself. She also led the tournament going one-under on the par three holes.
Next up for the Zags is their own tournament, the Coeur d'Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational, September 24-25.
