SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Gonzaga men's soccer team grabbed a non-conference win on the road at Sacramento State, 2-1, on the strength of a pair of second half goals on Thursday night.
The Zags and Hornets went into halftime in a scoreless tie, but it was GU that got the game-winner after both teams posted goals in the first 25 minutes of the second half.
Jake Kempf netted his first goal of the season just over two minutes into the second half to give Gonzaga a 1-0 lead. The junior ripped a short from the corner of the box over the outstretched arm of the goalkeeper.
Quinn Liebmann picked up the assist.
After Sac State scored in the 71
st minute to tie the score at 1-1, GU responded with less than five minutes to play on a great move by
Demitrius Kigeya to get through the defense. The GU freshman dribbled through the top of the box and found a home in the low corner for what would be the game winner.
Gonzaga was outshot 13-10 overall, but had six shots on goal to just one for Sacramento State.
The Zags wrap their four-game road swing on Sept. 25 at UC Santa Barbara. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and links to live coverage will be available on GoZags.com.
