Nolan is five-over after first two rounds
ERIE, Colo. – The Gonzaga men's golf team opened their 2018-19 schedule at the Mark Simpson Invitational Monday. The Zags are in 12th after the first two rounds at the Colorado National Golf Club.
The Zags are 31-over par (607) entering Tuesday's final round. Gonzaga had a 296 (+8) team total in Round 1, and was 23-over (311) in the second round.
"In the morning round, the weather was pretty good with light winds and sunshine," Gonzaga Head Coach Robert Gray said. "We played decently with three solid scores from Nick, Charlie and Holden. For the afternoon round, the wind picked up with steady winds at 20 mph and gusts up to 30 mph. The guys played hard and kept a great attitude in the tough conditions, but we didn't adjust our games well enough as a whole to maintain our position after the first round."
Nick Nolan led GU on the first day and is five-over (149) after two rounds. He is tied for 31st and opened the day with a 73 (+1) in the first round, before a 76 (+4) in Round 2. Starting on Hole 12, Nolan was two-under after the first six holes in the first round and was one-under with two holes remaining.
The Bulldogs' Charlie Magruder is tied for 40th at six-over (150). He carded a 73 (+1) in the first round, and was five-over (77) in Round 2. He made 14 pars in the first round. Nolan and Magruder both made 23 pars on the first day.
Holden Backes (T73rd), Chris Mogg (T77th) and Brentt Salas (T77th) are 11-over (155), 13-over (157) and 13-over (157). Backes opened the season with a 73 (+1) in the first round, making 14 pars.
"With a pretty young team, we're going to have some up and downs this season like today," Gray said. "We won't play in those type of conditions very often, but it's a great learning experience. Greens are harder to hit in regulation during windy conditions, emphasizing the importance of the short game.
"It's going to be a bit cooler for the final round tomorrow with temperatures in the upper 40's to start and mid 60's for the high. That will provide some different challenges from today. We have the skillset to put together a great final round but we need to be better on the par 3's and par 5's, where we lost a lot of ground today."
Kyler Dunkle of Utah and Colorado's Trevor Olkowski and Daniel O'Loughlin are tied for first place on the leaderboard at five-under (139). Tournament hosts, Colorado, leads the team leaderboard at eight-under (568). Utah is five-under (571) in second place.
Gonzaga tees off Tuesday at 7:15 a.m. Pacific Time. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
