Series Notes:
- Gonzaga and San Diego meet for the 63rd time in program history and the 32nd time in San Diego.
- The Bulldogs are 0-4 against the Toreros under Diane Nelson.
- Gonzaga's last win over San Diego came on Sept. 30, 1994 with a 3-1 win in Spokane. The series dates back to 1987 when the first conference match between the two teams was played. Gonzaga was successful early on in the series, winning 9 of the first 15 contests included a seven-match win streak from 1988-91.
SCOUTING SAN DIEGO:
- The Toreros had a shaky start to the 2018 season, finishing the nonconference slate with a 3-6 overall record. USD picked up nonconference wins over No. 12 Baylor, Tennessee and Louisiana, and after a conference-opening loss to Saint Mary's, the Toreros have rattled off three-straight wins and are 3-1 in WCC play.
- San Diego averages 13.86 kills per set hitting .231 to go along with 12.94 assists, 13.63 digs and 2.33 blocks per set. The Toreros are led by Lauren Fuller and Addie Picha at 3.19 and 2.20 kills per set, respectively. Picha also leads the defensive effort, averaging 1.53 blocks per set to rank 10th in the nation. Additionally, Kelli Barry chips in a team-high 3.16 digs while Anna Newsome collects 6.68 assists per set.
- San Diego received 14 votes in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll release on Sept. 24.
- The Toreros were picked to finish second in the Preseason WCC Rankings while receiving one first-place vote. Both Picha and Kaity Edwards were named to the All-WCC Preseason Volleyball team.
MILESTONE WATCH: SMITH SNEAKING UP ON 2,000 ASSISTS
Senior setter Faith Smith is nearing the 2,000 career assists milestone. Currently, she has 1,991 assists and ranks fourth in program history during the rally scoring era in career assists. This season, she's averaging 2.00 assists per set, and the San Diego, Calif. native carries a 5.28 assists per set average throughout her career, good for fourth in program history.
