Morgan Greene runs fastest women’s 600 meters in program history
SPOKANE, Wash. — The Gonzaga women's and men's track and field teams opened their indoor schedules at the University of Washington Preview inside the Dempsey Center Saturday.
In the men's mile, Brandon Pollard won his heat with a time of 4:05.68, which is the second-fastest indoor mile in program history. He placed sixth overall, with the second-fastest collegiate finish. Scott Kopczynski was close behind with the third-fastest indoor mile in GU history at 4:06.22. He was second in his heat and ninth overall.
"The pure mile started well for the Zags as Brandon Pollard would win his heat," Director of GU Track and Field Pat Tyson said. "Great stuff by our milers today, considering they have been training on their own this last four weeks! They obviously did their homework.
Jake Perrin placed 15th in the men's 3,000 meters with a time of 8:09.72. He was the top collegiate finisher in the elite heat, just off of his 8:09.02 personal record. Yacine Guermali was the No. 2 collegian of the day and moved into fourth all-time at GU with a time of 8:11.37. He won his heat, placed 16th overall, and set a new personal record by 21 seconds. Peter Hogan climbed to No. 7 in program history with an 8:18.66 finish.
"It was a great opening to the 2019 track season," Tyson said. "These guys have been self-starters over the last month. We met in Seattle and put on quite a show! Overall six Zags got personal bests in the 3,000 meters. More to come next Saturday at WSU and then another 14 guys will make the trek back to UW Invitational January 25-26!"
Running in her first meet for the Zags, Morgan Greene set a school record in the 600 meters. The freshman led her entire heat and crossed the line at 1:38.90.
Jordan McPhee ran the sixth-fastest indoor mile in women's program history at 5:09.04. Ally Legard followed close behind at 5:10.37, the ninth-fastest time in GU history.
In the women's 3,000 meters, Claire Manley's 10:04.50 finish ranks eighth all-time at Gonzaga, while Aimee Piercy's 10:08.06 time is now 10th.
"It was a really fun opener for the women," Gonzaga women's Head Coach Jake Stewart said. "We had 11 PR's and one just miss running just off her personal best. Most of importantly, the group had fun, they got out on the track, ran the best race they could and enjoyed themselves! A great start for the New Year, a step forward for the group they can be proud of today."
The Zags travel to the WSU Indoor Open next Saturday. Results will be available on GoZags.com following the meet.
