The WSU Indoor Open: The 17th annual event begins with a few field events Friday and runs through Saturday afternoon. All running events will start inside the WSU Indoor Practice Facility at 10 a.m. Saturday. Teams from Idaho, Eastern Washington, Whitworth, Spokane CC, Central Washington, Lewis-Clark State, Puget Sound, Linfield, will join Gonzaga and the host Cougars at this meet.
Last season at the meet: Brandon Pollard led a top-four sweep for the Gonzaga men in the 800 meters … Pollard won the event with a time of 1:53.95, the second-fastest 800-meter finish in program history … Mason Villarma was second at 1:57.44, the ninth-best time in GU history … Jonah Sandoval's 1:57.65 finish ranks 10th on the GU all-time list … Alex Heffelfinger ran the fastest mile time of the day at 4:27.92 … He was the top-finisher in the 45-runner field … In the men's 3,000 meters, Dominic Arce made his collegiate debut with a second place finish with a time of 8:59.37 … Aimee Piercy came in third in the women's 800 meters … She crossed the line at 2:24.46, winning the second heat, and narrowly missing the first place finish … Ally Legard and Claire Gillett were sixth and seventh at 2:26.66 and 2:26.90 … In the women's 300 meters, Claren Fraher placed seventh, followed by Brianna Vasquez in eighth … Fraher's time of 46.49 edged out her teammate Vasquez's time of 46.53 … Caroline McCarthy (10:52.31) and Katherine Gustafson (10:56.68) were eighth and ninth in the women's 3,000 meters.
Last week: At the season-opening UW Indoor Preview, running in her first meet for the Zags, Morgan Greene set a school record in the 600 meters … The freshman led her entire heat and crossed the line at 1:38.90 … In the men's mile, Brandon Pollard won his heat with a time of 4:05.68, which is the second-fastest indoor mile in program history … He placed sixth overall, with the second-fastest collegiate finish … Scott Kopczynski was close behind with the third-fastest indoor mile in GU history at 4:06.22 … Jake Perrin placed 15th in the men's 3,000 meters with a time of 8:09.72 … He was the top collegiate finisher in the elite heat, just off of his 8:09.02 personal record … Yacine Guermali was the No. 2 collegian of the day and moved into fourth all-time at GU with a time of 8:11.37 … Peter Hogan climbed to No. 7 in program history with an 8:18.66 finish … Jordan McPhee ran the sixth-fastest indoor mile in women's program history at 5:09.04 … Ally Legard followed close behind at 5:10.37, the ninth-fastest time in GU history … In the women's 3,000 meters, Claire Manley's 10:04.50 finish ranks eighth all-time at Gonzaga, while Aimee Piercy's 10:08.06 time is now 10th.
